Business vault

Not part of the free edition, and not switched on for every paying organization either. The Data Vault and Data Mart accelerators are enrolled surfaces. If the menu items described below are missing, that is the reason, and it is not a fault. See Pricing for what each edition includes.

The business vault holds objects you derive from the raw vault to apply business logic: conformed keys, computed relationships, and calculated satellites. In DeltaVault every business vault object is anchored to the raw vault objects it comes from, so its lineage is always explicit. There is no free-standing “new business object” action.

Derive a business object

Start from the raw vault objects the business object builds on, then derive.

  1. Select one or more raw vault objects on the canvas.
  2. Right-click and choose the derivation that fits the selection:
    • Derive Business Hub from one or more hubs.
    • Derive Business Link from one or more links.
    • Derive Business Satellite from a hub or a link, optionally with that object’s satellites selected as inputs.
  3. In the Derive business hub, Derive business link, or Derive business satellite dialog, enter a Name and choose Confirm.

The menu only offers derivations the current selection supports, so you cannot, for example, derive a business link from a hub.

Follow the derivation lineage

A derived object renders as a distinct node joined to its sources by dashed edges, so you can see at a glance where it comes from. Click it to open its detail pane, and the Derived from section lists the source objects and marks the derivation as Manual.

Business vault objects are editable from the detail pane, the same way raw objects are:

  • A business hub lists its Business keys read-only. The key parts come from the raw hubs it derives from, so edit them on the raw hub.
  • Every derived object has a Derivation notes field under Derived from, for recording why the object exists and how its logic works.
  • A business satellite supports column exclusion: select one or more columns on the node and choose Exclude Columns from the menu to drop columns the derivation should not carry. The item stays disabled until at least one column is selected.

Durability under re-acceleration

Derived business objects are part of your model, not something acceleration regenerates from source. Re-running acceleration on the raw vault leaves your business hubs, links, and satellites in place, along with their business-key edits, derivation notes, and column exclusions. Removing an edit returns that object to its derived shape, exactly as it does for raw objects.
